Type and purpose of backpack
Backpacks can generally be divided into three categories based on their volume: large, medium, and small.
Large backpacks, with a volume of over 50 liters, are suitable for medium to long-distance travel and more professional adventure activities. For example, if you are going on a long-distance trip or mountaineering expedition in regions like Tibet, you should undoubtedly choose a large backpack with a capacity of more than 50 liters.
Some short- to medium-term trips that involve camping in the wilderness also require a large backpack, as it is the only type that can hold the tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping mats needed for camping. Large backpacks can be further divided into mountaineering bags and backpacks for long-distance travel, based on their intended use.
Mountaineering bags are generally long and narrow, designed to pass through narrow terrains. These bags typically have two compartments, separated by a zippered interlayer, making it convenient to organize and access your items. The sides and top of the backpack can be used to strap on tents and cushions, effectively increasing the carrying capacity.
The bag also features an ice pick cover on the outside, which can be used to secure ice picks and trekking poles. One of the most important features of these backpacks is their back structure, which includes a lightweight aluminum alloy frame to support the body of the bag. The back is ergonomically designed to fit the contours of the body. The shoulder straps are wide and thick, shaped in an "S" curve to match the physiological curve of the human body. There is also a chest strap that prevents the shoulder straps from sliding sideways, ensuring the wearer's comfort.
Additionally, these backpacks feature a strong, wide, and adjustable hip belt, which helps distribute the weight more evenly. The belt height can be adjusted to fit the user's body shape, allowing for better weight distribution. Generally, the bottom of the backpack rests above the hips, transferring more than half of the backpack's weight to the waist, which reduces the burden on the shoulders and minimizes shoulder strain during long treks.
The structure of long-distance travel backpacks is similar to that of mountaineering bags, but the design is wider, and they come with multiple side pockets for organizing smaller items. The front of a long-distance travel backpack can usually be fully opened, which makes packing and accessing items much easier.
Medium-sized backpacks typically have a volume between 30 and 50 liters and offer more versatility. These backpacks are ideal for 2 to 4 days of outdoor travel, urban commuting, or long-distance trips that don't involve camping. They can comfortably carry clothes and other daily necessities. The styles and designs of medium-sized backpacks vary, with some models featuring side pockets for better organization. The back structure is generally similar to that of large backpacks.
Small backpacks have a volume of less than 30 liters and are primarily used in urban environments. They are also well-suited for 1- to 2-day outings.
